Attaining your forklift license in New Zealand might seem like a challenge. But with the right forklift training provider, it’s actually a lot smoother than you might think. At NFL Forklifts, we’ve been providing comprehensive training for aspiring forklift drivers for many years.
Here, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to obtaining your forklift license. Walk through the step-by-step process with the NFL Forklifts team to begin your journey to full qualification.
On-Road vs. Off-Road
Before we get started, it’s important to distinguish whether you need to operate a forklift on or off a road. If you need to drive a forklift on-road, this is a slightly more complex process that requires you to get an ‘F’ endorsement on your New Zealand road license.
However, off-road forklift driving is less regulated because it’s generally less risky. All training for off-road forklift driving must still be carefully delivered, as safety is just as important in a warehouse as it is on the road.
At NFL Forklifts, we offer courses for off-road forklift registration and approved courses for attaining your ‘F’ endorsement for on-road forklift driving. Both are great ways to increase your employability, but it’s important to know which path you want to take before you start your training.
The Process of Obtaining Your Forklift License
H3: Step One - Eligibility Check
First, you need to be sure that you meet the eligibility criteria. In New Zealand, you need to be at least 16 years old to operate a forklift. You must also hold a New Zealand driver’s license, especially if you’re planning on training for on-road forklift operations.
Step Two – Choose a Reputable Training Provider
From there, the next step is to choose your reputable training provider - be sure they will provide you with a quality education and put you on the path to actually obtaining your license.
At NFL Forklifts, we pride ourselves on comprehensively training our learners by providing hands-on training and theoretical knowledge. With Competenz-registered instructors and years of experience backing us, all our learners benefit from well-developed courses.
Be sure your forklift training provider is experienced and transparent about their training methods and demonstrates extensive knowledge of the process to help guide you through it. Look for references to the Code of Practice for Forklift Driver Training and registered instructors.
Step Three – Enrol in a Forklift Training Course
The next step is to actually enrol in your forklift training course! Most of these courses last for a single day, so be prepared to either take leave or block out the day to complete the training.
Keep in mind that most courses are also generally capped at a certain number of attendees. For example, we cap our one-day courses at 12 learners, meaning the earlier you book, the more likely you are to secure a space on a day that works for you.
Step Four – Attend Your Training
It’s the big day! When you attend your training, you can expect to encounter a theoretical and a practical section. When it comes to our course, we offer a theory section capped by a multiple-choice written test, followed by a hands-on session driving an actual forklift.
Step Five – Assessment and Evaluation
Depending on your provider, you’ll need to show a certain level of proficiency in order to pass. At NFL, we ask our learners to answer 80% of the multiple choice questions correctly and demonstrate competence in the practical section, during which they’re guided by our registered instructors.
Once you’re done with the first section of training, you’ll be issued with a Forklift Driving Certificate. This covers in-house and off-road operators. If you’re aiming for an ‘F’ Endorsement on your licence, this is a separate short course on the same day that follows the same format. Once again, this is unnecessary if you’re not planning to drive a forklift on the road.
With all that done, congratulations! You’re officially licensed to operate a forklift in New Zealand. With just one day of training, you’ll bolster your employability in a variety of industries and give yourself the confidence to operate an incredibly versatile piece of machinery.
Learn the basic skills you need to keep both you and your workmates safe while giving yourself a leg-up in the industry.
